عَامّ is the active participle of the verb عَمّ to be universal, general, common. There is a saying in classical Arabic: عَمّ ثُؤَبَاءُ النّاعِسِ the yawning of the drowsy became common, used when something happens in one place, and then becomes widespread, such as often is the case when one person yawns, which shows how long the contagiousness of yawning has been observed!
