Did you know…

The dual is أَبَوَانِ , which shows the root letters of أَبٌ to be أ ب و , with the و having been suppressed in forming the noun أَبٌ . Literally, the dual would mean two fathers, but in fact is used to mean parents. This is an instance of تَغْلِيْبٌ predominance, where the word أَبٌ is predominating the word أُمّ , and the pair are thus referred to by the dual of the former. There are many such instances in Arabic, such as اَلْقَمَرَانِ the two moons, used to refer to the Sun and the Moon.
