Did you know…

The obsolete French word roule used to refer to the roll of paper on which an actor’s part in a play was written. From that was derived the modern French and English word role, meaning the part played by an actor. In Classical Arabic دَور is the verbal noun of the verb دار to revolve, encircle, surround, and so literally means a round, turning, roll. The above connection between the words roll and role was carried over into Modern Arabic due to English and French influence, and so دَور has come to mean role.
