The primary meaning of عنى is to concern, worry someone. Although the verb عنى does not occur in the Quran in the most widely read narration (that of Hafs, from ‘Asim), it does occur in other narrations; the verse لِكُلّ امْرِئٍ مّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others) (80:37), is also read لِكُلّ امْرِئٍ مّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يَعنِيه Every man that day will have an issue to disquiet him.
